Become a leader in chronic pain management without studying for another degree

Treating chronic pain isn’t easy.

It involves practitioners who understand the nature of chronic pain and who can provide evidence-based solutions.

Research shows that combining physical therapies, lifestyle changes and psychotherapy leads to better outcomes in chronic pain patients.

But how can you learn about all of this when you’re running a busy physiotherapy practice?

And even if you could, how can you implement it all without the proper systems?

That’s where we help.

The Chronic Pain Method training course draws upon the latest scientific evidence in chronic pain management. It teaches you all you need to know about chronic pain, effective treatment strategies and how to work with a psychotherapist to best help your patients.

Plus, we teach you how to easily integrate this treatment model into your practice, and provide all the ongoing support you need, so you can focus on treating your patients.

In short, we help you become a leader in your field without you having to study another degree.

Learn how to treat chronic pain and help more patients

Around 3.2 million people in Australia currently live with chronic pain that interferes with their daily life. Due to an ageing population, this figure is expected to rise to 5.2 million by 2050.

Many people with chronic pain initially seek the help of a physiotherapist like yourself. While you’ve been trained in relieving pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions, chronic pain is much more complicated.

Unless you understand the nature of chronic pain, and the best way to treat it, there’s only so much you can do for your patients. Eventually, they end up leaving your practice and you end up feeling frustrated and disappointed.

At The Chronic Pain Method, we train you in effective chronic pain management so you can help more of your patients and improve your patient retention rate.

Build a reputation as a practitioner who can help chronic pain patients and grow your practice.

Why we developed The Chronic Pain Method

The Chronic Pain Method was born out of a desire to combine the benefits of physiotherapy with psychotherapy to provide better chronic pain solutions.

Most physiotherapists have a hard time treating chronic pain because they are trained in manual treatment. But chronic pain is more than physical; it’s emotional and psychosocial which means manual treatment on its own isn’t an effective long-term strategy.

And because people with chronic pain only experience limited benefit from physio treatment, they usually leave the practice, still in pain, and the physiotherapist is left feeling disappointed and frustrated they couldn’t help their patient.

But then we learned about one physiotherapist who combined physiotherapy treatment with psychotherapy to treat his chronic pain patients. Not only was he able to deliver effective treatment strategies to his patients, but they kept coming back because they noticed a difference in how they were feeling.

The only problem was, he couldn’t take on any more patients, as his appointment schedule was full. It was also difficult to scale his business because the way he worked was unique to him and impossible to teach other physiotherapists.

We realised that to effectively treat patients with chronic pain we needed to combine both emotional and mechanical treatment strategies, which involved two therapists. But for patients to get the best results these therapists had to work transparently together.

In other words, physiotherapists needed to be trained in emotional support and psychotherapists needed to be trained to work in a transparent treatment model.

So, we developed The Chronic Pain Method – a training program for both physiotherapists and psychotherapists.

And because we know how difficult it is to integrate such a model into a practice –we created a system for this as well – which is also included in the course.

Testimonials and Results

Wondering what others say about The Chronic Pain Method?

Both my Physiotherapist and the Psychotherapist at the clinic have made me feel incredibly supported and heard.

This is different from many of the practitioners I have visited in the past, who did not make me feel heard or like my symptoms/feelings/experiences were valid.  The practitioners at CPM have been nothing but supportive and show genuine care and consideration to what you have to say.

I was nervous but also excited to commit to something that felt real. Up until that point I had managed fibromyalgia and chronic pain in a very isolated and haphazard way. I was looking forward to working with a team of people who I could lean on for their expertise and guidance.

The biggest benefit I have received is a combination of feeling understood and feeling like I have support around me. That has allowed me to feel safe, to open up to both practitioners and become curious about my health and mindset. Prior to the program, exploring how I felt both physically and mentally felt terrifying and “too much”. But with their support and patience, I feel empowered to be more aware of my body and how I feel.

Ella, 28 years

CPM is a complete program which has had considerable effort, structure and refinement put into it.

It encompasses not just the core modals of treatment but also relates them to one another, creating a more complimentary treatment. It looks at the underlying factors, deep inside the mind and nervous system that underpins everything that we are, rather than addressing symptoms or physical/mechanical elements.

Knowing that programs such as this exist is a form of relief just by itself. Chronic pain can be debilitating, it impedes your life and so often reduces you to feeling and living like a subset of your true self.

Since engaging in the program, I have shifted from a life of fear, pain, and limitation to a life of hope, adventure and fun. I am enjoying weekends away camping and hiking and have an overall improved sense of peace and happiness. I saw my body before as being a restriction whereas I now see it as an enabler; a tool which (provided I honor and provide what it needs) can do more than I believed it could.

A Case Study

Pathway to mastery: A case study of progress from a Physiotherapy student to a successful Chronic Pain Practitioner and educator

Early career choices:

Q: What drew you to the field of Physiotherapy?
A: I initially wanted to become a doctor however didn’t get the marks needed for the course. I chose physiotherapy as an alternative pathway to get into medicine later. I thought physiotherapy was the closest to being a doctor.
The reason I got into health overall is the desire to help others.

Undergraduate Degree Experience:

Q: How did you find your time studying for your degree?
A: I didn’t mind studying at all and enjoyed the subjects I was good at. I never really thought about the notion of enjoying the degree as I wanted to transfer over to medicine after 2 years. However, at the end of my second year I decided that I would stay with physiotherapy because I didn’t like the idea of another 7 years of study without a break and earning money started to feel like an important necessity!

Expectations vs Reality:

Q: After your first year of working in the field, did the industry match your expectations?
A: I didn’t have too many expectations when I started working in the field. I was aware that the industry was divided into three main areas: hospitals, aged care, and private practice. My preference was always private practice due to its potential for growth and greater professional autonomy compared to public healthcare. After one year of working in private practice, I found the diversity of patient presentations and interactions with people from various backgrounds to be quite enjoyable.

Career journey to date:

Q: Could you share your professional journey so far without naming employers?
A: Certainly, I have worked in three different practices:

Practice 1: I worked at this practice as a physio assistant, and they offered me a job after I graduated. The job was in 2 different locations (Sydney and another 1.5 hours’ drive away from home). I chose this job as they offered me a good salary, good opportunity for clinical growth and the opportunity to learn the business side of physiotherapy. I was working 4 days a week at this practice, which was attractive as I could spend some time on exploring other areas of interest.

Practice 2: I was at my second place of employment for 2 years; this practice was similar to the first place but they had the addition of a gym attached to the clinic. There were many perks available to me in this role, namely:  being close to home, paying for our travel to Melbourne for professional development, having doctors and surgeons coming in and providing a lecture for us and contributing 50% of the fee of a master’s degree if you chose to complete one. The reason I chose this clinic was mostly due to professional and business development opportunities. I also liked working in a gym setting and having access to equipment.

I left because I felt that their professional development was only based on their philosophy of physiotherapy which was too one dimensional for where my interests were heading at this stage of my own professional development.

Practice 3: I have been at the third practice since 2019. I settled on this role because I felt it was a great place to support me on my journey of professional development.

Master’s Degree:

Q: Why did you decide to pursue a master’s degree?
A: I realised that my professional development was stagnating, and I was becoming too comfortable and   losing my ability to critically and logically problem solve when it came to patient presentations. I attributed this to:

  • Being too confident with treating and my own abilities
  • Not being stimulated by the therapists around me
  • I didn’t like not understanding why some patients don’t respond to treatment

This led me to sign up for masters despite the initial criticism of not needing it to excel in private practice.

Career Highlights:

Q: What has been the highlight of your career so far?
A: This would have to be teaching and fulfilling my initial goal of helping people

Q: Lowlight?
A: Remuneration does not reflect the hours of work put in. Close minded nature of medical professionals/stakeholders involved in patient care to collaborate and understand that working together is better than working alone.

Let’s talk about Chronic Pain:

Q: What sparked your interest in working in the chronic pain space?
A: With my goal of wanting to help people, I found that people suffering with chronic pain don’t get the same attention as people with acute or subacute injuries. Physiotherapy is thought to be all about sports people, but it is far from this. I want to be part of the movement to change this notion and to help as many people as I can, both practitioners and patients.

Q: Do you believe in the future of Chronic Pain treatments?
A: Yes, I firmly believe that with a commitment to improving our understanding of assessment and treatment approaches, progress in the field of chronic pain treatment is attainable. An open-minded approach, with a focus on understanding each patient as an individual rather than following a rigid textbook protocol, is essential because patients often share valuable insights that textbooks cannot provide.

What’s the benefit for patients?

Patients being treated under The Chronic Pain Method treatment module are more likely to experience positive results in managing their chronic pain.

This is because treatments are based on best-practice and scientific evidence in chronic pain management research. Patients also benefit by having a team of health practitioners who can discuss their case without them having to manage communication between individual practitioners.

How will this benefit my practice?

Increasing your skills and knowledge around physiotherapy for effective chronic pain management will build your reputation as a practitioner who is skilled in this area.

As the number of people suffering from chronic pain is expected to continue to increase, there will be more demand for physiotherapists who can help patients with complex chronic pain.

This will translate to being known in your industry as someone who can assist with chronic pain management, which will lead to increased patient bookings.

How can I integrate The Chronic Pain Method into my practice?

We offer ongoing support and training to you and your staff so you can seamlessly integrate these systems and processes into your practice.

And if you don’t have support staff in your practice, we provide the relevant administrative support to you.

Are the training modules recorded so I can access them later?

???

What if I don’t like the therapist I’m paired with?

We believe that the best results occur when patients and practitioners feel comfortable with one another. If the patient is happy with the therapist, swapping to another person may compromise the treatment.

Of course, if you have serious concerns about the therapist you’re working with please contact us to discuss your concerns.

How will this help me market my practice?

When you’re known for a particular skill-set, it’s much easier to market yourself so you stand out from the crowd. Through our membership hub, you will also receive monthly marketing content such as blogs and social media posts to help you promote your practice.
