Guest Presenter

A head shot of Josh Pate

Dr Joshua Pate

Dr Joshua W. Pate, PhD, is a senior lecturer in physiotherapy and a senior physiotherapist.

We are thrilled to have Joshua join us and present 6 modules of up to the minute research on pain and treatment.

His research focus is on a child’s concept of pain; the way that pain’s  definition/purposes/mechanisms are understood.

Josh is fascinated by how re-conceptualising pain according to contemporary science may change the way pain is treated.

As part of his PhD he developed the Concept of Pain Inventory (COPI) and he is now working on developing and testing educational resources, particularly in schools.

Josh worked with TED-Ed to make two online animations with millions of views, he co-founded a pain science interview platform called ‘One Thing’, and he is now a children’s book author of five books about pain  – Zoe and Zak’s Pain Hacks Book Series 1-5.

Josh dreams of generational conceptual and behaviour change regarding the complexity of pain.

Become a leader in chronic pain management without studying for another degree

Treating chronic pain isn’t easy.

It involves practitioners who understand the nature of chronic pain and who can provide evidence-based solutions.

Research shows that combining physical therapies, lifestyle changes and psychotherapy leads to better outcomes in chronic pain patients.

But how can you learn about all of this when you’re running a busy physiotherapy practice?

And even if you could, how can you implement it all without the proper systems?

That’s where we help.

The Chronic Pain Method draws upon the latest scientific evidence in chronic pain management. It teaches you all you need to know about chronic pain, effective treatment strategies and how to work with a psychotherapist to best help your patients.

Plus, we teach you how to easily integrate this treatment model into your practice, and provide all the ongoing support you need, so you can focus on treating your patients.

In short, we help you become a leader in your field without you having to study another degree.

Learn how to treat chronic pain and help more patients

Around 3.2 million people in Australia currently live with chronic pain that interferes with their daily life. Due to an ageing population, this figure is expected to rise to 5.2 million by 2050.

Many people with chronic pain initially seek the help of a physiotherapist like yourself. While you’ve been trained in relieving pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions, chronic pain is much more complicated.

Unless you understand the nature of chronic pain, and the best way to treat it, there’s only so much you can do for your patients. Eventually, they end up leaving your practice and you end up feeling frustrated and disappointed.

At The Chronic Pain Method, we train you in effective chronic pain management so you can help more of your patients and improve your patient retention rate.

Build a reputation as a practitioner who can help chronic pain patients and grow your practice.

Who is it for?

The Chronic Pain Method pain management course and membership is for physiotherapists who:

  • Want to stand out in the crowded market and differentiate themselves from other physiotherapists
  • Want to be known for their skills in treating chronic pain
  • Are willing to work with a psychotherapist to deliver effective treatments to their patients
  • Are ready to invest in building their skill sets
  • Are open to personal growth
  • Want their support staff to receive additional training and learn how to integrate new programs into their practice
  • Want to become a leader or supervisor in chronic pain management in the future
  • Want effective marketing done for them
  • Want to become part of a community where they receive mentoring, supervision, and masterclasses
Who is it for?

Who is it not for?

This chronic pain management course and membership is not for physiotherapists who:

  • Are only interested in musculoskeletal cases
  • Prefer to concentrate on treating acute injuries
  • Are uncomfortable when patients express emotions around their chronic pain
  • Do not want to learn skills on how to address a patient when there is no longer a mechanical explanation for the pain
  • Are not willing to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Would prefer to refer patients out to a therapist for emotional support
  • Who have a full practice and do not want to diversify with another stream of new patients

The course includes teaching from trained Physiotherapy and Psychotherapy school lecturers.

You will learn new skills in identifying and working with trauma and how to address, speak to and manage patient emotional output. The course will also provide you with life skills and the opportunity to grow as a person and as a practitioner.

Why we developed The Chronic Pain Method

The Chronic Pain Method was born out of a desire to combine the benefits of physiotherapy with psychotherapy to provide better chronic pain solutions.

Most physiotherapists have a hard time treating chronic pain because they are trained in manual treatment. But chronic pain is more than physical; it’s emotional and psychosocial which means manual treatment on its own isn’t an effective long-term strategy.

And because people with chronic pain only experience limited benefit from physio treatment, they usually leave the practice, still in pain, and the physiotherapist is left feeling disappointed and frustrated they couldn’t help their patient.

But then we learned about one physiotherapist who combined physiotherapy treatment with psychotherapy to treat his chronic pain patients. Not only was he able to deliver effective treatment strategies to his patients, but they kept coming back because they noticed a difference in how they were feeling.

The only problem was, he couldn’t take on any more patients, as his appointment schedule was full. It was also difficult to scale his business because the way he worked was unique to him and impossible to teach other physiotherapists.

We realised that to effectively treat patients with chronic pain we needed to combine both emotional and mechanical treatment strategies, which involved two therapists. But for patients to get the best results these therapists had to work transparently together.

In other words, physiotherapists needed to be trained in emotional support and psychotherapists needed to be trained to work in a transparent treatment model.

So, we developed The Chronic Pain Method – a training program for both physiotherapists and psychotherapists.

And because we know how difficult it is to integrate such a model into a practice –we created a system for this as well – which is also included in the course.

Testimonials and Results

Wondering what others say about The Chronic Pain Method?

Both my Physiotherapist and the Psychotherapist at the clinic have made me feel incredibly supported and heard.

This is different from many of the practitioners I have visited in the past, who did not make me feel heard or like my symptoms/feelings/experiences were valid.  The practitioners at CPM have been nothing but supportive and show genuine care and consideration to what you have to say.

I was nervous but also excited to commit to something that felt real. Up until that point I had managed fibromyalgia and chronic pain in a very isolated and haphazard way. I was looking forward to working with a team of people who I could lean on for their expertise and guidance.

The biggest benefit I have received is a combination of feeling understood and feeling like I have support around me. That has allowed me to feel safe, to open up to both practitioners and become curious about my health and mindset. Prior to the program, exploring how I felt both physically and mentally felt terrifying and “too much”. But with their support and patience, I feel empowered to be more aware of my body and how I feel.

Who teaches the course?

We’ll let you know very soon.

What kinds of techniques will you teach?

This information is coming soon.

What’s the benefit for patients?

Patients being treated under The Chronic Pain Method treatment module are more likely to experience positive results in managing their chronic pain.

This is because treatments are based on best-practice and scientific evidence in chronic pain management research. Patients also benefit by having a team of health practitioners who can discuss their case without them having to manage communication between individual practitioners.

How will this benefit my practice?

Increasing your skills and knowledge around physiotherapy for effective chronic pain management will build your reputation as a practitioner who is skilled in this area.

As the number of people suffering from chronic pain is expected to continue to increase, there will be more demand for physiotherapists who can help patients with complex chronic pain.

This will translate to being known in your industry as someone who can assist with chronic pain management, which will lead to increased patient bookings.

How can I integrate The Chronic Pain Method into my practice?

We offer ongoing support and training to you and your staff so you can seamlessly integrate these systems and processes into your practice.

And if you don’t have support staff in your practice, we provide the relevant administrative support to you.

Are the training modules recorded so I can access them later?

Information coming soon.

What if I don’t like the therapist I’m paired with?

We believe that the best results occur when patients and practitioners feel comfortable with one another. If the patient is happy with the therapist, swapping to another person may compromise the treatment.

Of course, if you have serious concerns about the therapist you’re working with please contact us to discuss your concerns.

How will this help me market my practice?

When you’re known for a particular skill-set, it’s much easier to market yourself so you stand out from the crowd. Through our membership hub, you will also receive monthly marketing content such as blogs and social media posts to help you promote your practice.
